Over-the-Door Laundry Hamper: Pros, Cons and How to Choose

Over-the-Door Laundry Hamper: Pros, Cons and How to Choose

An over-the-door laundry hamper hangs from hooks on top of a door instead of sitting on the floor. It's one of the simplest ways to free up space in a small bedroom, but it isn't the right answer for every room. Here is what you gain, what you give up, and how to check your door before you buy.

The pros

It frees up floor space

This is the main reason people choose one. In a small bedroom, a shared room or a dorm, the corner a floor hamper takes up is often the corner you need for a desk, a bin or a bean bag.

It doesn't get knocked over

Floor hampers get kicked, tipped and used as step stools. A hamper on the door stays put, and so do the clothes inside it.

It sits where clothes come off

Most people undress near the door or the bed. A hamper on the bedroom door is right on the path in and out, which makes it more likely to get used. That placement is one of the tricks in our guide on getting kids to use the hamper.

No drilling

Over-the-door hampers hang on hooks, so they work for renters and dorm rooms where screws in the wall are not allowed.

The cons

Not every door fits

Hooks are made for a range of door thicknesses. Very thick doors, doors with tight frames, or doors with weather stripping at the top may not fit, or may not close properly.

The door gets heavier

A full hamper adds weight to the door. That is fine for normal interior doors, but it may make a light door swing or drift if the hinges are loose.

It can bump the door

Every time the door swings, the hamper swings with it. Pads on the back of the frame protect the door's surface and keep things quiet.

Capacity is usually smaller

Hanging bags are often slimmer than big floor baskets. For one kid or one student that is usually fine. For a family's shared laundry, a floor basket may still be better.

The two-minute door check

  1. Measure the door thickness. Use a tape measure at the top edge. Compare it with the hook size listed for the hamper.
  2. Check the gap above the door. Close the door and look at the top. If there is almost no gap between the door and the frame, hooks may stop it from closing.
  3. Look at the hinges. If the door drifts open or closed on its own, tighten the hinge screws first.
  4. Pick the side. Hang the hamper on the side where people walk in, so it's easy to use and doesn't hit furniture when the door opens.

What to look for in a good one

  • Padded hooks and frame so the door doesn't get scratched.
  • Mesh or breathable fabric so damp clothes don't trap smell. Our guide to washing sports uniforms covers the smell side.
  • An easy way to empty it. A zip at the bottom of the bag beats lifting the whole bag off the hooks.
  • A design your kid will actually use. For sports fans, a hamper with a basketball hoop makes the habit a game.

Who it's best for

Over-the-door hampers are best for kids' bedrooms, shared rooms, small apartments and dorms. They are less useful in a big walk-in closet or a laundry room where a large floor basket fits easily. For more ways to save space, see our small bedroom storage ideas.

Where Sockshot fits

Sockshot is our over-the-door hamper. It hangs on hooks with protective pads, needs no drilling, and has a mini basketball hoop on top. The mesh bag unzips at the bottom, so you can empty it into a laundry basket without taking it down. We make it, so take our opinion for what it is, and do the door check above first.

FAQ

Will an over-the-door hamper fit a bathroom door?

Often yes, as long as the door thickness matches the hooks and the hamper doesn't block a towel rack or a mirror.

Can I use it on a closet door?

Yes, if the closet door is a standard hinged door. Sliding and folding closet doors usually don't work with hooks.

How do I stop it from swinging?

Pads on the back of the frame reduce movement. Some people add a small adhesive hook or a strip of removable mounting tape near the bottom of the door to hold the bag in place.
